upgrading .net from 1.0 to ver 1.1

I am currently running windows xp professional. I installed vb.net with asp.net 1.0. When i went to creat a new project it told me i needed asp.net version 1.1. I installed this and i am still getting the error that asp.net 1.0 is installed and i can either use 1.0 or download asp.net 1.1. Can you tell me why, after installing asp.net 1.1 vb.net is not seeing it? I need to know how to fix this. Thank you for any help i can get. Sincerely, Robert H.
