Hello, I am a data analyst and R programmer. I took some time to read the project requirements and here is what I have to say. From the way you wrote the project description you seem like a straight forward employer that actually understands what they want unlike a lot here.. Anyway, the project shall involve connecting with the database if you want this to be running continuously, or working locally if you don't. A basic answer to how the success/failure is driven can be acheived by simply running a multiple regression analysis, but that reaally is basic and does not always provide good explanations. Depending on variables types, deviations and more many other models/analysis could be implemented. I doubt that you need machine learning involved here, but there are a few things that can come handy. I imagine if that is the first set of tests, then the second set might entail the meta-data aspect of word lengths that you mentioned; here again individually. If a candidate cause has not been found by that point, then we might be at a point where we can apply either supervised or unsupervised techniques.
