There is an existing library called WiFiManager that enables you to connect to any types of AP. Keep in mind that the esp8266 only supports 802.11bgn on 2.4GHz only. It does not work with 5GHz. Hi, I have the ESP8266 hardware with me, so I can develop and validate as well. I'll create a captive webserver, which will present a webpage to scan wifi AP. User will be able to select/add AP add password and feed it to ESP8266. If success ESP connects to desired AP else it goes back to captive webserver. I will develop it in arduino IDE with wifi manager library. I have done it earlier, so it should not take much time. Look forward to work with you.
