• This assessment consists of a 5000 word professionally prepared and soft bound report into a specified business sector (or PG study/self employment) which each of you has already identified as the area for progression following completion of undergraduate study. You made a presentation on this in the first semester and received feedback from your tutor and your peers. You should use this feedback to help you with your final report
Suggested report structure
Front page:
• Use images or graphics that relate to the subject matter
• Give the report a title e.g A report into trends and employment opportunities in the Scottish off-shore oil industry
• Provide your name, number, module code and module title
Executive summary
• This goes before the report. It summarises what the report is about and the findings. The aim of an Executive Summary is to provide an interested reader with a brief overview…to show them whether it is of use to them. After reading it they may decide to continue with reading, or not, depending on their interest. Write it last, when everything else is finished
Contents page
• Provides a list of headings and related page numbers
• Do this last, when you have finished formatting
• Must look professional, you will be business graduates, this is a basic, expected skill!
List of Figures/Tables
• If you use Figures (eg graphs) or Tables in your report these should be numbered and titled and listed after the Contents with their related page numbers
• Try to develop your own figures and tables, rather than just copying from another source. Again, it shows what you are capable of. You need to show as a reference where the data was obtained from
1.0 Introduction
• This is the start of the main body of the report. It is where the page numbering begins
• You will decide on the relevant subsections that you want to include. They will be numbered 1.1, 1.2 etc.
• In the Introduction you will introduce the context of your research, the sector and the specific part of that sector you are focussing on. You will be demonstrating that you understand the nature of this industry, who the key players are and so on. This section could include statistics, maps, graphs etc. It will show the reader that you have an in-depth understanding of the scope of the sector. It will include all the references of your sources
• If you include graphs etc, you must comment on what they show
• You will use the information that you have collected on your chosen topic to carry out analyses using business analysis tools (eg SWOT, PESTEL, Porter’s 5 forces etc). These are the foundations of evidence based business decision making, a fundamental skill for business graduates. These analyses will be in the Appendices
• All your sources must be referenced in -text and in the Reference List
2.0 Industry Analysis and Evaluation
• This section shows your ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate information from diverse sources.
• You will have analysed and synthesised the information (data) you have collected using the business analysis tools indicated above, and presented these analyses in the Appendices. Do use Word (or other software) tools to help with presenting these, eg use SmartArt. Because, for example a SWOT will include information from different sources, you will be showing your ability to synthesise.
• In the main body of the text you will discuss and critically evaluate all the information you now have. You may choose what you include but key elements to include will be

➢ Opportunities
• Remember to continue to reference, not just the data itself, but what other authors have said about the trends for example
• The language of discussion and critical evaluation is significant. Look for words in your work like because, or as a result of this, or this shows that, to demonstrate your depth of understanding
3.1 Employment/self-employment/PG opportunities and your suitability
• In this section you need to show of the employment/self-employment/PG opportunities in this sector. Your analyses will have given you the information you need for this
• Secondly, you need to critically evaluate your suitability for the opportunity(ies) you have identified as suitable for you. Lots of evidence here, lots of ‘because’. You could include your CV in the Appendices to support this
4.0 Conclusion
• The final section brings everything together in a concluding summary
5.0 Reference List
• This list in formatted in Harvard style and includes all the sources you have mentioned in your report, no more, no less.
• This may be the first thing the assessor reads. The range and quality of the sources you have used will give the assessor an indication what information you have used to prepare and write your report.
6.0 Appendices
• The Appendices will contain your business analyses and possibly your CV. These are not included in the word count
