What do you think makes a beautiful wristwatch?
Timeless and ordinary.
Can you tell us about your approach to designing a timepiece?
Instead of the object itself, I focused on designing the interrelationship between the object and its user. The muted right-hand side secondary clock of The Long Distance was the result after a series of rational development processes under the rules and theories of modernism. These processes were also intended to search the most appropriate format to interact with the sense of distance inside human’s subconsciousness so that user’s consonances occur.
Where did the idea for the Long Distance come from?
I found that most dual-time timepieces in the world were just decorative and superficial designs. They were not clear and simple enough to illustrate the real context between times, users and distances. There was a need to redesign this item for people who really use it.
How did you go about choosing the colour combinations of the new Long Distance?
The black series must be also produced in order to complete this design in whole. Brightness and darkness are the two most basic elements for a long distance relationship in real life. For me, a serious distance relationship is a continuous concatenation of transitions between day and night, happiness and pain everyday.
Your company says "The work that goes into making each LD 1.0 is a partially machine, partially craft process" Could you tell us more about the craft involved in making the watch?
I do not want the Long Distance Watch mass produced just like another piece of oppressive industrial item in the market and this is how we are different from some other companies. Our works are niche and only come in a limited quantity each season. Although this makes our costs and prices a bit higher, it allows us to keep some parts and details handcrafted, such as the edges of the case, lugs and buckle, so that each Long Distance Watch comes out more artistically with fine individual work with little differences like a piece of jewel.
How do you go about sourcing materials for your watch? I note that your leather comes from Argentina.
Sourcing materials was a long and time-consuming process for us. For example the leather we use for the strap, it took us nine months and was selected from over a hundred calf black leather samples collected from 15 countries. The reason of our final decision was not the leather is from Argentina or Italy, it was because the leather surface has an unusual delicate texture that I needed and the deepest black color that all other leathers did not carry. I think that was the most suitable material I should use on this plain modern object.
Are you planning to design any more watches soon?
I do not think I will design any more watches in near future. I am just an industrial designer, not a watch designer.
