Need help with Art

"Art engages our attention in a way that our everyday environment cannot". We live in a visual world, art is all around us, not just in museums or galleries. This course is about looking at art through themes and comparing Eastern and Western art historical practices through these themes in order to better understand how people from different times and geographical locations express basic concepts such as food, politics, the human body, and sexuality. Chapter 1 of your text opens with: "No definitions are universal, timeless, and absolute. All definitions are framed within a culture's systems of knowledge... to answer the question 'What is art' we would have to ask: What is art for whom and when?" Because we live in a country with people who come from a multitude of different cultural backgrounds, I am turning Essay #1 to you and asking you to look inward to your own background and cultural heritage. Using Chapter 1 as a guide, I would like you to think about an art piece you know personally and tell me about it. This can be anything! A family heirloom you grew up with, something from a house of worship, a painting or sculpture that is important to you. I would like you to tell me why it is significant and then, using the text, tell me about its function, visual form, and content. Please follow the guidelines in your syllabus for length and font size. Your paper should be at least one and a half pages and in a font no larger than "12" with one inch margins. Have fun with this essay! No outside research or citations are required, I want this to come only from your experience and what you have taken from Chapter 1 of our text. You are required to write essays where you will be asked to verbalize your thoughts and ideas about lecture and reading material. There will be 6 essay questions this semester. Essays are graded on content, organization, grammar, style, and spelling. Essays should be a minimum of 1.5 full pages in length, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, free of all spelling and grammatical errors, no plagiarism, Chicago Style formatting with footnotes and bibliography (where necessary) and will be uploaded onto Canvas via a .docx format only.
