Optimising Socialengine based site and database

PROBLEM: Our website is based on Socialengine CMS (Zend framework). It is very slow. This is because: 1) The database (Server version: 5.5.5 MariaDB) is large at 25GB and requires optimisation. Even when we remove all the active content (widgets, text and images) from our member page it still takes a while to load, suggesting database is very heavy and slow. We know tables are too big and need to be broken out for example. 2) There is also a lot of old code and plugins we dont use. There is a lot of code on pages which is not needed. 3) GT Metrix and google page speed score makes a number of sugestions that can help, but the above 2 points are the main issues SERVER BACKGROUND: To recap, have a powerful dedicated server, it is 64GB ram, the storage is 1000GB NVMe hardrive. OUR SITE LOAD AND PROBLEM PAGES: We have 30,000 members, however, daily page views are usually just 1,000 to 2,000. Therefore we are not experiencing high traffic.
