The procedure is simple and it is executed every time a packet is received. The switch looks at the

the destination address of the incoming packet and:

• if the destination is already listed in its switching table, the switch will forward the packet to the port

indicated by the table

• if the destination is not in its switching table, then it will forward copies of the packet on all of its gates.

The switching table is populated by having the switch write that the packet source address is reachable

through the incoming gate where the packet was received.
