Hello! So I am looking for editorial help, of sorts, but not to fix spelling and grammar errors. I need help freshening up my word choices a bit. I main strength as a writer is dialogue. I love writing dialogue and (not to toot my own horn) but I'm pretty decent at it. It's the other parts that I struggle with. The narration. The body language. The action words. I'm not bad at those parts, but to be honest my vocabulary tends to be limited and I'm not very good at coming up with new and refreshing ways to word things. And because of this I tend to repeat the same boring phrases a lot. I don't want to do this! So again, I don't need mistakes fixed, I just need word/phrasing suggestions/improvements. I'd love it if you were a bit of a writer yourself, but it's not a necessity. And I'd love it if you have at least some editing experience as well, but again, not entirely necessary. I only ask that you have a way with words. Sorry this took so long to explain. A little about myself, I have published two novels already, one of them has been fairly successful so far, and new one that I'm asking for help with will be my first collection of short stories. They are all romantic in nature to a certain degree. They are small, personal moments in characters lives. Lonely people trying to make meaningful connections with others, stuff like that. Most of them are pretty short, but all together the document is 35,000 words. But I'm not necessary looking to hire someone for the full book right off the bat. I'd be open to hiring you for a couple stories first (some only being a page or two in length) to see how comparable we are for this job and if your changes meet my needs. Thank you! Unless you are talking about food, which, now that I think about it, you probably are. Hi there! I'd like to offer my ghostwriting skills. I've been a writer for about 10 years and completed various ghostwriting projects from fiction and non-fiction to proofreading, structuring and editing ones; a winner of local writing contests. My "philosophy" is creating 3-dimensional characters that can become independent after you create them and they will develop the story by themselves possessing their own motives, wishes, dreams, habits, and personalities. Hi, Luke, Very intriguing work. I read the sample you posted as well as excerpts of “The Appointment: Lost & Found (Book 1)” and “Guest Bed” on Amazon and found that you pulled my attention in and kept it. No mean feat. Perhaps the samples were not long enough for me to catch the repetitiveness of phrasing you spoke about, but we could refine that with a bit of chat, I would think. I like your idea of a trial. I have used the Freelancer milestones to that effect in my proposal. I believe your assessment of your dialogue is spot on and your overall voice in “Guest Bed” and the sample you posted reminds me a bit of Raymond Carver. My approach for the overall project would be the same as it is for the trial—read each story carefully all the way through while making no notes. Then, on the second reading, I would do the content editing using Word’s ‘track changes’ feature. I would then submit the marked-up copy to you for your review. Once that is approved, I would provide a clean, final copy. My Freelancer profile contains samples of my writing as well as line-editing and copy-editing. I understand your frustration, after a few pages, you find yourself using the same language to paint the picture you want your readers to connect with. At the same time, you don’t want someone who is just going to go through the pages and look up synonyms for what you have already written. I get it. Good morning! First of all, please allow me to tell you how disappointed I am that you ended your sample where you did. I desperately want to know WHY she was tapping her nails on the table. So, I'm going to be REALLY tacky, and ask you to share with me what she was upset about, even if we end up not working together. Deal? Okay, so a little bit of work history. When I was taking writing classes in college, I discovered that I loved editing even more than I loved writing - which was saying quite a bit, since I went on to become a twice-published author. However, over the last year, I have edited more than forty manuscripts, often for people who do not speak English well. What that means is that it has become my job, more or less, to help people find the right words - better words - to convey their thoughts. In terms of pay, I am flexible with the $25, depending on the length of the stories. If we continue to communicate on this, once I get an approximate word count from you, I can give you a more solid answer. One thing to note is that, based on your sample, you DO have talent, which makes the job much easier (and, therefore, less time, which means less money paid). As far as timeline goes, I am going to be out of town until this evening, but should we end up working together, once I am hired, I can have the manuscript back within 24 hours.
