In a span of thirty years we have witnessed three disparate regimes in Russia, each led by leaders who have had to improvise in the face of chaos, transition and conflicting ambitions. Russia itself is ever changing - the nature of its society and the hopes embedded within, the demands of and by its rulers and the climate of politics outside its realms. The question is: does the leader decide the direction of society or is he sculpted by the ideals of the people he governs? Is he defined by what he did or by what he did not do? The analysis of these political leaders and their role in shaping the country calls for a careful study of the successes and failures that characterize the regime they led. It should be examined on a myriad of levels, against yardsticks that allow room for the different interpretations existing on different terms. Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. All at some point, to some people, glorified. To others, at other times, abhorred.
