Design a Health Monitoring Software Architecture (HMSA)

In this challenge, we’d like your help in designing the Health Monitoring Software Architecture (HMSA) for a robotic arm system. We need your help laying out a plan for a software module that takes error flags from all other software modules, identifies when critical thresholds are exceeded, and prioritizes responses.

Challenge Rules:
The prize will be awarded for the most efficient, technically feasible design, submitted before the submission deadline. Design efficiency will be evaluated based on the lowest, credible estimated lines of code for implementing a solution.
No working executable code is required, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design and the credibility of your estimate of lines of code. Only complete submission packages that follow the attached Submission Guidelines will be evaluated (the Exit Survey Code must be included).

“Dennis S. provided a winning design of the Health Monitoring Software Architecture contest for the separately designed robotic arm for a NASA free-floating robot (Astrobee). This was a NASA contest and this design was selected from 23 entries as the most efficient and effective design. Dennis S. provided a thorough design submission. ”

Hi, thanks for the extension. For the sake of the solution should the anomalous events be viewed as standalone events or can multiple events occur at once?

Multiple events could occur, but you are free to set the priority of anomalies and responses to multiple events.

Just a reminder that due to the nature of this contest and the study that it supports, all submissions are screened for completeness only prior to the end of the contest. If the submission is complete, it is rated with 3 stars. Final review of all of the complete submissions to determine the best/selected submission will only occur after the contest closes. Best of luck.

Can you please clarify the note under table 2. What are the ways a user can interact with the arm?

If threshold changes happen in the future, we would like to be able to change them.

The ways that a user can interact with the arm is outlined in results listed in Table 1.

What communication protocol shall be used between HMSA and Modules and Astrobee?
Is there constraint on Power Consumption of HMSA?
Is there a flag available in modules which can be checked so that HMSA can know that modules are correctly working?

      • pred 5 let

A communication protocol like UDP can be assumed between HMSA and Astrobee and the software modules in Figure 1.
There is no specific power constraint in this challenge. However, if power consumption is important to understanding how your HMSA design will work, please include it in your submission.
There is not an independent flag for status for the Telemetry and Motion Control Modules. However, sensor data and power usage data should always provide continuous, non-zero values if their respective Modules are correctly working.
