I drown the "Kween Merry", in 100 feet of freezing cold water on Great Slave Lake, in Northern Canada, 2 years ago. It was a sad day. The Kween was a 40 ft aluminum, twin engine, house boat made by a company (now extinct) called Kingscraft. It was an awesome boat and I want another!

My boat partner and I purchased a 55' x 15' Kingscraft and soon it will begin a 2,400 mile journey from Page Arizona North to it's new home in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. We intend to rebuild it, from the hull up, over the next 12-18 months!

The first step is to find a designer/CAD expert (you!) to help us put it all back to gather in 3D so that we can plan it to perfection.

I envision starting with the base hull/superstructure and then adding layers for the various elements (ie. mechanical, electrical, navigation, lighting, solar + batteries & inverter) and as we add each layer I want to calculate certain things like weight and balance.

I am looking for a person or firm with creativity that is able to take existing specifications and pictures and turn that, plus our vision, into a, layered, 3D model that we can look at from every angle, edit and print, prior to starting construction.

I have decided to turn this first stage (modelling the superstructure) into a contest so that we can see your creativity before negotiating a formal agreement (hourly or fixed for specific work) for the other layers of the project.

This project is more about "space planning" than "photo realistic renderings" so if you have interior or home design skills AND can create beautiful, technically accurate, 3D models then please check this project out.

Heck, if you do a REALLY good job all the way through we could even barter a hell of a fishing trip on Great Slave Lake. If you are into fishing then this is one of those bucket list experiences!

So for this contest stage what I am looking for, specifically, is a scale 3D model of the 55' Kingscraft including;

- exterior hull from stem to stern but without props or rudders
- Interior showing ribs & cross members, floor joists, wall studs and ceiling structure
- main deck, railings, window openings, stairs
- upper deck / fly bridge

“Leopold was very knowledgeable and added a lot of value to the contest before it even closed. His insight and professionalism, and ultimately his work, lead me to award the contest to him and I would certainly work with him in the future.”

@luisss749 : just for information, Canvas app works with a Structure Sensor which costs + 400$, isn't really precise (especially for metal work) and as all 3d scanners based on infrared projectors (kinect, isense, realsense etc) can not work in daylight (daylight includes IR...)
As i mentioned earlier, the 2 only ways to scan this boat are:
1/ using a laser scanner (LIDAR)
2/ using photogrammetry with an app like agisoft photoscan or reality capture

And as for our client picking a good camera and taking pictures for 2 hours (with some instructions...) and then uploading them on a free cloud is certainly more practical and above all really more affordable, it is the only way to go...

As the Kween Merry wasn't the Queen Mary, without more photographs errors of 2 inches here, 5 inches there make a HUGE difference. Even if the model could still be used as a visual reference, it would always be necessary to take hundreds of measures before undertaking any alteration...

Hello, i've tried to find detailed info for the structure of the hull for this boat, if i understood right, you need the entire structure at detail ( all single elements), so you can plan, in addition to the furniture the pass of pipes, electric conduits, space for components under the floor, etc., to make this 'as-build' and get the 3d model is a nice qty of work, if you make a search in google maps for "canada 3d scanning" u can see some companies that maybe can help you to get the actual model, so you can outsource the rest of the job to a freelancer, also, there is an app that can help u to get a 3d scanned model for your boat, you can google this app, name is canvas (by google, 3d scanning tool/app), it works in ipad tables, i don't know if this works in exterior enviroments, i haven't readed the entire description for this product, pls if you get an advance using this app, post me back your comments.

Great contest, It looks hard, but I haven't done such detailed models for years. Even when I was modeling boats it was just for print. Thanks to the contest holder for the detailed information and brief :) so many employers neglect the importance of good information and reliable conversation. Thanks to lpk2 for his inputs as well :) It's good to see freelancers contributing and moving the conversation forward.

A few things, for the images I agree, they are quite lacking in perspective, but it's great to see details. Some measurements could work wonders if you can set that up properly(level) possibly using lasers or whatnot. Otherwise it could only be approximated. I think it's workable, but it will be quite taxing in time and in general. I applaud your wish to restore this great boat and I thank you for the opportunity to revisit the past.

I'm not really good with CAD, so I don't quite fit the requirements, but I'm a good modeler and I prize myself on completing models to scale and in detail. I work with a 3D application, I can still produce drawings and export STL files, it's just that it won't do any good for any SolidWorks or CAD user in general, since they won't have access to the options unless they use the same program. I'd like to think my models are 98% up to scale, because even if in the general sense everything is up to scale and measurements, details are never the same.

What I would like to add here even if it's probably not permitted(using outside links) is to share some images which came up from a search so that the freelancers here can get a better view of the outside and understand the hull a bit better.

This is a greatly detailed walkthrough:
http://www.kingscrafthouseboats.com/ even if anybody who searched for 2 seconds probably found it and there are some great images showing the boat from a distance here: http://www.boatersresources.com/bfs_detail.php?adid=425035&sr=40&sb=3&q1=&q2=&q3=&q4=1&q5=30000&q6=50000&q7=&q8=&q9=&q10=&q11=&q12=&q13=&q14=&q15=&q16=&q17=&q18=&q19=&q20=&q21=&q22=&q23=&q24=&q25=&q26=

      Now I'm off to model.

Even in aluminum, the hull is a warped surface so it is nearly impossible to measure with a ruler.
Unless you borrow a LIDAR, the way to go to have a precise model is photogrammetry.
If you can grab a DLSR/Hybrid Camera for the weekend as your iPhone doesn't allow you to lock the exposure among photographs.
I will explain you how to take the pictures in my first entry (hopefully Friday morning).

We do not have plans which is why we are trying to re-create it. The boat is a 55' Kingscraft Aluminum House Boat. All we have at the moment has been provided (2 PDF and pictures). We will have more measurements and pictures next week.

ok, I'm waiting for the actual measurement in order to produce a 3d model that u can use prior construction. In the PDF files only mention the specification. Have been waiting for a long time to be involved in tiny house projects.

    And that is the problem:

    - With just a single photograph of an object you can guess the proportions of the object.

    - With 2 photographs of an object taken with the same lens/zoom from 2 different locations you can estimate the positions of your camera and the position of some identified points in space, but you must have a measured object framed in the photographs to be able to estimate the exact distances between those points.

    - With a bunch of photographs from many different locations, you can estimate surfaces to construct a 3d model: that is photogrammetry.

I will provide you a draft tomorrow, only a basic draft and there is no chance that somebody manages to do really better without more data.
The problem is not the deadline or the price but the lack of data.
If you want, I would be pleased to explain you what I would need to be able to help you better and produce what you want.

I am sorry for having gone on so long, I am also new to freelancers.com

Thank you very much lpk2. I was not able to find any blueprints either and I understand and agree with the points you have raised. I think/was hoping it would be possible to create something "representative" from the PDF (showing deck & cabin sizes - to get overall dimensions) and the pictures of the inside which show the floor/wall structure. BUT, to your point, it would not be very accurate without more data. I agree.

How about this. I will be able to get measurements this weekend for key elements including quantities and spacing of main hull ribs & wall joists plus more pictures.

Would it be reasonable to expect a 3D model (55' x 15') with an approximation of the hull geometry, floor joists, wall/deck structures and window/door openings? The goal being that this "basic model" could be improved with more detailed measurements. If reasonable, this would be enough from this phase (the contest).

    Hello sir!

I find very beautiful the idea to want to fight the fate and to want to recreate something that you lost I studied architecture to make people happier and I would like to help you so that you are happy working on your boat.

I am really interested in your project. I have searched for several hours some references of your Kingscraft and I found 2 blogs, you must already know, with many photographs but there are no blueprints except from the deck you have already provided.

One more point of clarification... the reason the detail in the HULL is important is that we intend to turn the spaces between the ribs, and below the floorboards, into insulated coolers for food since the bottom of the aluminum hull is very cool all summer long due to the cold temperature of the lake.

The detail in the wall is less important since it will only be to determine where we can attach things and we are far more flexible in that regard.

NOT REQUIRED: No need to draw cleats, tie downs, door handles, windows handles or other small things.

And to be SUPER CLEAR, I am only using this contest phase to find the freelancer with the right skillset (and reasonable budget). There will be a lot more work to take this basic 3D model of the super structure and add all the other layers I mentioned in the original post.

I hope this makes it clearer. Please let me know any questions.

I want to see you produce a 3D model, as detailed as you wish, of the:

HULL: the bottom of the boat modelled to the size and angle of the current bottom. This is to include all *main* ribs and trusses that will be below the floor or behind a wall. Not every rib or bracket needs to be modelled.

MAIN FLOOR & CABIN: The walls, window & door openings, main floor joists or compartments (engine and anchor) should be included

UPPER DECK: the upper deck consists of the stairs off the back engine area leading the the deck space up to the flybridge

FLYBRIDGE: I am not interested in the gauges or details of the flybridge - just the structure that is the front windshield wrapping around to the railings. Add a steering wheel and captains chair for extra points so I can see scale.

RAILINGS: I would like to see the railings drawn in as well on both the main, upper and flybridge levels.

    That you for your feedback.

This is my first time using Freelancer.com and I am unsure as to whether I can expect to find the right freelancer. Let me try to clarify what my expectations are for this contest. I am "hoping" that this is not a big challenge for anyone with talent.

Let me be more clear on what I am looking for as part of the contest deliverable.
